5-minute read
Hi Friends,

We have exciting news this month: a partnership in Turkey, a blog series for market gardeners, and not one, but TWO upcoming webinars with John Kempf.

We’ll begin with a profile our rocket scientist-in-residence: Laura Kavanaugh.

🧬 1 big thing: Laura Kavanaugh talks DNA with Acres U.S.A.

AEA’s Chief Science Officer, Dr. Laura Kavanaugh, was interviewed in the most recent issue of Acres U.S.A magazine.

Some topics covered in the interview include:
  • Laura's journey from NASA scientist to soil researcher.
  • How third-generation DNA testing has revolutionized our understanding of soil biology.
  • How DNA sequencing can be a measurement tool that produces actionable results for a farmer.
  • How Laura has sampled soil from conventional farms and has been unable to find any DNA at all.
You can order a print issue or buy a pdf from Acres U.S.A here.

2. 🤝 AEA Partners with Turkish agtech firm Topraq
Pictured: AEA's CEO Eric Girdler (third from right), Director of Strategic Partnerships Kish Johnson (second from right) and International Client Success Manager Elena Sporrer (far right) with Topraq executives.

This month we announced our partnership with Topraq, a Turkish precision ag company with global reach.
  • The partnership will help us bring our regenerative agriculture solutions to growers in southeast Europe and west and central Asia.
  • Topraq specializes in using sensor data to optimize inputs such as water, energy, and fertilizers.
  • Topraq works primarily in Turkey and the surrounding regions.
  • The crops we'll focus on will include citrus, grapes, and cotton.
We’re excited for Topraq to help us spread the benefits of regenerative agriculture around the globe!

This month’s issue of Acres U.S.A. magazine also featured an opinion piece by John Kempf entitled “Designing Technology for Regeneration.”

Acres U.S.A. will be hosting a free webinar with John Kempf addressing the topic “Does Your Technology Help or Hurt Your Efforts to Regenerate Your Farm?”
  • John Kempf will present at the webinar, which will include a Q&A session.
What You’ll Learn:
  • The importance of setting regeneration as a core goal alongside food production.

7. Contest: Name that Crop!

Congratulations to Steven of Florida, who won last month’s “Name the Crop” contest!

Steven was one of the 55 people who correctly named Coffee as our mystery crop (for bonus points, the disease was coffee rust).

Can you name this month’s mystery crop? (pictured below) Submit your guess for a chance to win an AEA hat.
  • It's a tricky one!
  • Hint: It's one of the world's oldest domesticated crops.

8. 📸 Photo of the Month
Our social media followers loved this photo of AEA’s Director of Applied Agronomy David Miller checking in our cotton field trials.
  • We’ve been laser-focussed on nutrition management in cotton growing this year, as part of our work on the Integrity Grown™ verification standard.
  • David found promising initial results: lots of 4- and 5-lock bolls in Pima cotton, where 3 locks are typical (for non-cotton growers: a boll is the fiber-containing part of the cotton fruit; it is divided into multiple sections called locks).
  • Full results from this field trial will be published once they’re available.
