November 2025
6-minute read
Hi Friends,

Wintertime is imminent, and some of us are scrambling to bring in the harvest, while the season has already slowed down for others.

No matter what’s happening on your farm, there’s still plenty going on this time of year at AEA. In today’s Field Notes, we have:
  • Grant opportunities from the Healing Soils Foundation, which is providing up-front funding for regenerative projects that are on hold while they wait for federal or other funds to come through.
  • Fall soil applications, one of the best investments you can make to reduce input costs in the coming year. We have the final week of our Soil Primer sale, along with Revenant Charge™ registered and ready for purchase in more states.
But greenhouse growing can keep chugging along. So first, we check in on how we’ve reduced disease pressure in greenhouses by 50-70% in a single year.

1. 🥒 Preventing Disease in Greenhouses
Greenhouse growing offers a particular set of challenges:
  • The greenhouse microclimate that suits plants is also particularly hospitable to pests and disease.
  • Disease pressure can build over time as organisms take up residence in greenhouses, without any reason to leave.
  • Soil nutrients can become imbalanced without rainfall to wash away excesses.
We were approached by a greenhouse grower in Mexico, who faced increasing pest and disease pressure, in spite of also increasing their pesticide use.
  • The pesticides had initially provided control, but over time, their use led to soil degradation, weaker plants, and chemical resistance in target pests.
We designed an intensive nutritional program informed by bi-weekly sap analysis.
  • We implemented our protocol in one cucumber greenhouse
  • Two control greenhouses were left on the farm’s conventional program.

Outcomes

Compared to the control greenhouses, the greenhouse with AEA’s protocol had:
  • 50-70% less disease pressure (in this case, Fusarium)
  • 70% higher packout rate
  • 17% yield increase
  • Lowered synthetic inputs

The root cause for these successes was clear: increased plant health due to AEA’s regenerative nutrition. We found that, compared to the control, the plants in AEA’s greenhouse had:
  • 14.6% higher leaf relative density (an indication of photosynthetic efficiency)
  • 2.4% shorter internode spacing (an indication of plant health)

2. 🍅 Preorder our Market Gardener Line
We frequently get asked how to use AEA’s programs on small, diversified farms.

That’s why we were so excited to launch our Market Gardener Line this month, in partnership with the Market Gardener Institute. Now AEA’s regenerative products are simpler and more accessible for market gardeners and small growers.
  • Our 5 most useful products for market gardeners are now available in smaller sizes for smaller-scale farming.
  • The line includes BioCoat Gold, Revenant Charge, MicroPak, MacroPak, and Pinion.
  • Bundling all 5 saves 15%
We’ve been running joint field trials on market gardens with MGI, and the initial results from this year are lookin awesome; we’re excited to share them with you once they’ve been fully reviewed.

We’ll also be sharing resources over the coming year for how to use nutrition management on small, diversified farms. Stay tuned!

3. 🤖 FieldLark delivers 40,000% ROI

Speaking of market gardening, we’ve been fortunate to work with the marvelous market gardeners Casey and Tori Ostwinch at Honey Tree Farm in North Carolina.
  • Like every exceptional grower we know, Casey and Tori never take their feet off the gas: they’re always learning and innovating.
“I’ve never seen such gorgeous perfect vegetables,” AEA agronomist Shelley Katz told Field Notes. “Their farm stand videos look like AI.”
  • While their farm stand videos are 100% real, there is some AI powering their real-world success.
Casey and Tori shared with us how they put FieldLark AI to use improving their fall crop performance in their hoophouses.
  • They uploaded 30 or so soil tests to FieldLark
  • They followed up with questions to deeply understand their soils
  • FieldLark recommended soil amendments for their fall hoophouse crops, as well as weekly foliar AEA nutrition.
The results were excellent: fantastic size, yield, and quality in their fall vegetables.
  • “In extra sales last week compared to last year, FieldLark paid for itself for 8 years,” Casey said.
Back of the envelope: 50 weeks * 8 years * 100% = 40,000%

 4. ⏰ Last Call for 10% off Fall Soil Primer!
Boosting biology in the fall remains the best way we’ve seen to reduce input costs in the coming season.

The reason can be boiled down to a single word: humus.
  • Lower temperatures promote the stabilization of carbon into humus.
  • Certain microbes that contribute to humus formation actually thrive during winter.
  • Humus releases nutrients slowly and consistently, reducing the need for synthetic fertilizers.
There’s only one week left to get 10% off on Rejuvenate™, SeaShield™, and SeaGuard to boost biology with fall soil applications!
  • Rejuvenate is a full-spectrum microbial support: including carbohydrates, humic acid, and seaweed.
  • SeaShield provides the omega fats beloved by soil fungi.
  • SeaGuard is a less-expensive version of SeaShield for non-organic.
Sale ends November 15th.

5. 💰 Grants for Midwestern Farmers from Healing Soils Foundation

Healing Soils Foundation (HSF) is a Midwest-based nonprofit working to restore the health of our soil—and, in turn, the health of our people, communities, and planet—by supporting the organic and regenerative farmers leading this transformation.
  • Through direct grants and innovative financing, HSF helps farmers bridge gaps in public funding and access the capital needed to keep regenerative projects moving forward.
Their Regenerative Farmer Assurance Fund (RFAF) provides upfront, flexible capital that enables farmers to implement conservation practices, build on-farm infrastructure, and pursue regenerative market opportunities without delay. RFAF is now entering its third round.
  • Through recoupable grants, RFAF allows producers to access funds at the start of a project—bridging the gap until reimbursement arrives.
  • The means that resources can be recouped and reinvested to support the next farmer in line.
  • In doing so, RFAF transforms limited philanthropic dollars into a revolving engine of resilience, ensuring that farmers have the liquidity and confidence to keep leading the transition to a regenerative future.
RFAF is available to organic and regenerative producers in the midwestern states of  Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin
Applicants must demonstrate a confirmed opportunity such as:
  • A signed contract with a buyer or processor,
  • A public grant or cost-share award (e.g., EQIP, CSP, RFSI, FLSP, or state conservation program), or
  • A verified regenerative market opportunity ready for execution.

 6. 📸 Photo of the Month
We had to interview grower Dave Cole after he sent us this photo of the monster blueberries he grew at Legacy Valley in North Carolina.
  • The bushes are only 3-4 years old and already stand 6 feet tall.
  • They have also deterred pests: an infestation of yellownecked caterpillars was completely dead after 4 days of feeding on Dave’s bushes.
"I try to educate my customers about our growing practices and what constitutes clean food. . . . And when they taste our berries, they say, ‘oh my gosh, we've never tasted blueberries this sweet and this good before." says Dave.
