3 Essential Tips for Biological Inoculants 

Remember these 3 things when using a biological inoculant as part of the regenerative soil primer:

#1 Speed

Soak dry inoculants like Spectrum, Mycogenesis, or OP8 in a small amount of clean, lukewarm water and stir to activate the microbes. 10-15 minutes of soaking is usually sufficient. Many species in inoculants will become inactive after four hours contact with water, so plan to have the tank emptied within four hours of adding inoculants. 

Getting products out as quickly as possible will give them maximum contact with soil and crop residues.

#2 Filter

Filter or screen any remaining solids out of the solution and always add biological inoculants to your spray tank last. 

The carriers for dry inoculants are made up of finely ground peat moss, humic substances, calcium, or kelp powders. While this particulate matter won’t pose a problem for some application equipment, you’ll prevent potential clogs by straining it off. Once the product has been hydrated, the microbes will be in the water, not the carrier material, so you can discard any filtered material onto the ground or compost.   

#3 Soak

Microbes need moisture, food, habitat, and protection from sunlight in order to survive. To ensure they get all that, the Soil Primer needs to soak into the top 2-3 inches of the soil, so you’ll need to use enough water in your mix, apply before a soaking rain, or irrigate after applying and let water carry the biology under the soil surface. Light tillage or spraying directly into standing crops can also provide penetration and protection.
